NEWPORT TO ENSENADA  
55TH ANNUAL REGATTA
 AND THE GIANT PAELLA

The cooking of the "Giant Paella"  on Ensenada's main tourist Street "Avenida Lopez Mateos " was one of the most popular after race activities of  the Newport to Ensenada  Regatta  in 2000 and 2001.  It has become  an integral part of the largest international yacht race in the world., If you didn't get in on  the fun and festivities in 2001,  Get your tickets early this time and don't miss out !!

 

The event is organized by and is in benefit of the Cancer Association of Baja California, a non profit Cancer Association in Baja Ca. and the United States .

 

This great event  will again be held in Ensenada on   Saturday  April 27, 2002   with lots of Paella for all. We are cooking for 1000 people.  If you don’t know what a Paella is, It is the traditional food of Spain , with a rice base. And  If you asked  the head cook, Senor Victor Salazar of Ensenada what it takes to prepare a dish this big, this is what he will tell you :

10 qts. Of Olive Oil,  253 lbs. of rice ,80 grams of saffron, 55 lbs. calamari,  66 lbs. of shrimp. 120 lbs. pork meat, 140 lbs of chicken,  110 lbs. of clams in shell, 77 lbs of mussels, 40 lbs of onions, 60 lbs. of tomatoes, a few other choice ingredients, and a lot of love and patience. "

The preparation of this delicious dish starts early in the morning first with the building of an open fire and the placement of the huge Paella pan.  Then with a tem of approximately 20 There is a lot of activity  with the chopping of onions, tomatoes and the rest of  the ingredients.

Festivities will start at Noon with the paella served at 2:00 p.m. There will be lots of fun, music, folkloric dance exhibitions, entertainment , food and libations,  Plus raffles with the prizes donated by local merchants.

Cost of ticket  is $15.00.  This includes a plate of Paella, bread, 2 drinks. (beer, wine or  soda)  and rights to the raffle.

 

All proceeds derived from this event will further the efforts of the association to build a "Free" cancer clinic in Ensenada that will provide treatment, programs and support to the low income people of Baja California. This clinic when it is completed will provide services to many persons affected by this deadly disease that do not have the financial resources for treatment. It will be the only one of its kind in Baja California, and desperately needed. The municipality of Ensenada has donated a parcel of land for the clinic, but funds are needed in order to start construction. Your ticket purchase will help us reach our goal!!
