As we enter the 21st year of the AIDS Pandemic we are reminded more than ever that the fight is far from over. A group of local AIDS supporters and advocates are currently organizing a memorial project so the lessons of AIDS will never be forgotten. There is no singular face to HIV/AIDS, as the pandemic has spared no Country, avoided no community, and respected no border. There have been over 22 million worldwide who have died from AIDS. It has affected every corner, community, and culture of this world's population. There are approximately 36 million people living with HIV/AIDS Worldwide and the numbers are rapidly growing in every demographic. There have been tens of billions of dollars have been spent fighting the disease and we are still miles away from finding a cure.

The mission of the San Diego Memorial Project is to provide a tranquil place of solace for those affected by HIV/AIDS, and to provide a concrete symbol to educate as many as possible of the remaining threat of the AIDS epidemic.

“As the AIDS Pandemic continues to worsen, it is more important than ever not to forget the pain and loss for millions around the world. The AIDS Memorial will be a visible educational landmark and a powerful reminder. It will be a tangible symbol around which we can marshal our resources to educate our youth and citizenry about this deadly disease.” As with many memorials, it will be seen by thousands if not tens of thousands of residents and visitors each year.” said St. Clair Adams, who is spearheading the project. “It could also be a place to hold events like the Candle Light Memorial, World AIDS Day, and services for those who pass from AIDS.”

San Diego will join 22 other known communities around the world including but not limited to; The National AIDS Memorial Grove, San Francisco, California, AIDS Living Memorial Grove, San Luis Obispo, California, Life Memorial Park Foundation, Buffalo, New York, The Sierra Club AIDS Memorial San Jose, California, Loretto AIDS Memorial Garden, Nerinx, Kentucky, AIDS Memorial Garden, Clemmons, North Carolina, The Hope Garden, New York City, New York, AIDS Memorial Garden, Mobile, Alabama, The Living AIDS Memorial Garden, Charleston, West Virginia, Sydney Park AIDS Memorial Grove, Sydney, Australia, Cawthra Park AIDS Memorial, Toronto, Canada, AIDS Memorial, Lusaka, Amsterdam, AIDS Memorial Key West, Florida, AIDS Memorial Chapel, West Hollywood, California, The AIDS Memorial of Sonoma County, California, Trees of Life, Sacksville Park Manchester, England, AIDS Memorial Project, Berkley, California, Louisiana State University AIDS Memorial, The Wall-Las Memorias Project, Los Angeles, California, AIDS Memorial Society, Sunset Beach Park Vancouver, British Columbia, AIDS Memorial Garden Foundation, Lasdon Park, Somers, New York, AIDS Memorial Monument Project, Perth, Australia.

The AIDS Memorial will be a serene and beautiful setting the will serve as a monument to those lost to AIDS, as a tribute to the thousands of friends, family and caregivers who were a part of their lives, and as a compelling testament to the battle that still lies ahead. The Memorial will ensure the continued commitment to AIDS education. Current educational approaches are not successfully changing attitudes and behavior toward this disease. A dramatic education tool featuring an interactive timeline of the major events throughout the history of the disease.

Mr. Adams along with travel agent Sue Buettner of Carefree Travel (formerly owner Hillcrest Travel) have organized a 7 day Mexican Riviera cruise to raise funds for the memorial venture. Carnival Cruises will generously donate $280 per cabin that is sold by the memorial project. This cruise not only offers you fun and excitement over the Halloween week, it makes it possible for you help make the memorial a reality. The ship departs from Los Angeles on October 27 and returns on November 3rd.

The ports of destinations are Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta. This all happens aboard one of Carnival’s most luxurious cruise liners, the “Elation.” Included in the ticket price are room, food, welcome party, Captain’s cocktail party, Las Vegas style shows, Captain’s Gala dinner, ship wide buffets, bands and orchestras, full casino, swimming pools, weight room and spa, plus many other entertaining activities. Also, Carnival will throw in a $50 per cabin shipboard credit and a private party for anyone participating in this fundraiser. This cruise ship has everything to make your 7-day voyage exciting and memorable. The per person cost of this fundraising extravaganza is $ 749 for inside cabin and $ 849 for cabin with a window, which includes your port charges and taxes. Again, $280 per cabin will be donated to the San Diego AIDS Memorial Project. Contact Sue Buettner to make a reservation at 619-278-7402. Space is limited, so immediate reservation is suggested.

The proceeds from the cruise and all future events, plus any corporate and private donations, will be deposited into an endowment account that will pay for construction, future maintenance, and site insurance. This project is 100% volunteer and non-profit.
