International Institute for Peace through
Tourism held its annual conference in
Kampala, Uganda May 17 - 23, 2007
|
|
My attendance this past
week at the
International Institute for
Peace through Tourism, (IIPT), conference
in Uganda was another eye opener
for me.
Founder and President, Louis
D'Amore, attracted some of the
brightest stars in the industry
to take up his cause. Over 30
countries were represented and more
than 300 delegates
came to the capital city of
Kampala to work 5
days on issues related to tourism and
peace. A former Marine, Mr.
D'Amore has taken an idea from
the mid 1980's to a work
in progress with a bright
future.
His
Excellency Yoweri Kaguta
Museveni, President of Uganda,
opened the conference with a
warm welcome and showing full
support by the government, he
declared the first ever Tourism
For Peace week by any country in
Africa. The conference was also
attended by Jordanian senator,
Akel Biltaji, who is also a
special
advisor to His Majesty King
Abdullah II. Mr. Beltaji is also
the former
Minister of Tourism for Jordan. Ministers of
Tourism from Tanzania, Sudan,
Uganda, and South Africa came
with their interpreters and
addressed the assembly. There was time for
the representative from each country to present and
educators from around the world
led thoughtful
discussions on the essence of
peace through tourism. Please
support a group like IIPT or
if you would like to know more
about the IIPT. Click

Special thanks for the support from Jennifer Archer and Priority Pass and the lounges they offer travelers. I had the fortune of stopping at two of the lounges for a 6 hour layover in London and an 8 hour layover in Dubai. It was a great way to get away from the crowds in the airports and find a bit of solace in the quiet and comfortable lounges. They are filled with food and of course my favorite, a wireless connection! For the last 15 years Priority Pass has been offering access to over 500 airport lounges. Take a look and see if you should be a member. I know I am hooked on Priority Pass!
This coming week I will be in New York City to meet with friends and colleagues who represent luxury travel in what they are calling the Big MACK region of the world (Montenegro, Albania, Croatia and Kosovo). If you are following travel trends, you'll know they are on to something!
And on June 10, we welcome John Johnson, one of my former classmates who was our student body president while in high school. He has gained a new title given to him by the media in Kosovo, The Father of Kosovo. This should be a very interesting interview, LIVE in New York City, Sunday, June 10th.
While in New York City,I will have an opportunity to work a couple of days with my colleagues from the Department of Homeland Security. You can count on more interviews with department officials and on the second Sunday of each month we have the Center for Disease Control on TravelTalkRADIO to talk about healthy travel.
At the end of this month, I hope
to be in Jordan on business and
take a few days to participate
in the upcoming Tourism4Peace
summit. I have been honored to
work with this group of
elite travel industry experts
from Egypt, Israel, Jordan and
Palestine. All have a one goal;
to share the riches of the land
with travelers without borders
or boundaries. I hope
you will take a moment to view
their Web site. Click

Please join me as I
introduce you to some
extraordinary people in the
tourism industry. The show will
start in a few hours, so please take a
listen to the live program or
join me through the archives
which will be posted shortly after the
live broadcast.
Safe travels,
Sandy Dhuyvetter

Exploring the source of the Nile in Uganda, one has to consider what it would be like to float all the way to Egypt. That means from South to North, no doubt, a strange sensation from the western world. |
