Welcome to TravelTalkRADIO's weekly newsletter. |
|
We began our visit by arriving at the Cairo International airport after 15 hours flying time from Los Angeles. Having done many trips of this length, we have learned that one of the best ways to avoid jet lag is to rest well on the flight, eat lightly and avoid alcohol (I know that is not much fun for some, but it truly is worth it once you arrive fresh and clear-headed). Please note, you can find alcoholic beverages in Egypt even though many Egyptians do not drink because of their religious beliefs. And while we are on the subject of religious beliefs, many Egyptians are Moslems. So let's get this fact out in the open right away. As an American, I have been force-fed a diet of fear by the mainstream media regarding the Moslem people. We need to realize that by far the greatest percentage of Moslems are the kindest and most welcoming of people. They adore their families and work extremely hard to provide a life of peace and co-existence with all cultures and religions. The extremists of any religion or political beliefs are, of course, the ones that get the most attention. The journalistic principle of if it bleeds it leads is sadly giving many very good people a raw deal when it comes to understanding their cultures.
Our hope is that if we can experience the countries of these precious people with open minds and hearts, we will begin to distinguish the differences between a large number of extremely good people and a small handful of people who wish to hurt others in the name of religion. While in Egypt, I have never felt safer in any country and I do not travel with guards or any sort of extra security just because we are in the tourism industry. We are here as any normal visitors would be, experiencing the wonders of this ancient yet truly vivacious society. I find that perhaps more than any country I have visited, Egypt and its people are truly happy to have guests in their land and the openness of their children toward visitors is an excellent example of this fact. After all, children learn from their elders. The Egyptians exhibit no rudeness or hostility to strangers, but rather a unique charm of awe and admiration for travelers from abroad. You can rest assured that when you are in Egypt, you will feel the love and the welcome that is given to all from the many nations from around the world who visit this fascinating country each year.
From the temples in Aswan and Luxor, to spectacular cruises on the Nile, the Valley of the Kings and of course the fabulous resorts in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt is a land of many wonders. Please join us in the upcoming weeks as we celebrate Egypt and its rich heritage. I invite you to join me on TravelTalkRADIO this Sunday from 9 - 11am Pacific Time either on a conventional radio station or on the Internet streaming live from TravelTalkRADIO.com and a multitude of other Web sites throughout our beautiful world. Safe travels,
Sandy |

TARA RIORDAN SELECTED FOR INTERNATIONAL YOUNG POLITICAL LEADERS PROGRAM
Tara Riordan works with the US Department of Homeland Security in Washington DC and is a regular contributor to TravelTalkRADIO.
We are very proud of her accomplishments
and are honored to be able to share with you
the news of her being selected as a delegate
to China for a 14 day political study program.
|
 |
WASHINGTON TaraLyn M. Riordan has been selected by the American Council of Young Political Leaders (ACYPL) as a delegate to China for a 14-day political study program from September 8-22, 2006. She will join eight other young political leaders from across the United States to study Chinas political system, engage in dialogue on bilateral issues and forge professional relationships.
ACYPL targets young political leaders likely to assume future leadership positions in their national governments, said Brad Minnick, ACYPLs Executive Director. Our international exchanges build bridges between emerging leaders in the U.S. and other countries to promote mutual understanding and respect for each others political cultures and ideologies.
Tara will join other delegates in Washington, DC, for briefings by the U.S. Department of State and the Chinese Embassy before flying on to Beijing. The group will be guests of the All China Youth Federation, ACYPLs long-term exchange partner, during their two week stay.
I am honored to represent ACYPL as a delegate from my home state, said Tara. This will be a chance to better understand the current political, economic and cultural dynamics in China and to help people there better understand the United States.
U.S. delegates are selected from a competitive, bipartisan field of several hundred nominees for participation in ACYPLs international exchanges. Nearly 40 current members of Congress, six sitting Governors (including Taras nominator, Ohios Governor Bob Taft) and several current and former Cabinet secretaries were ACYPL delegates earlier in their careers. Reciprocal visits bring young leaders from abroad to the United States for an introduction to American democracy and culture and our federalist form of government.
ACYPL is a nonprofit bipartisan international exchange organization funded in part through a grant from the U.S. Department of States Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. It is considered the nations premier international exchange organization for emerging political leaders.
