American Bus Marketplace 2005

Top 100 Events & Festivals | Industry Facts | Find ABA Members | Press Room

The song says that ‘Chicago is My Kind of Town’, but from Feb. 4 to Feb. 9, 2005, Chicago was ABA’s kind of town – when delegates from the 2005 American Bus Marketplace experienced dazzling entertainment, productive appointments, fun events, and much, much more.

SPECIAL TRAVEL TALK NEWS Program
L I S T E N  •  L E A R N  •  FEEL THE EXPERIENCE

While the entertainment and hospitality of Chicago and the sponsors was amazing, there was work to be done.  A redesigned Marketplace floor helped delegates enjoy more networking opportunities and the ‘buzz’ around the show was how productive the appointments were. In all, there were more than 90,000 appointments -- an all-time high! More great numbers for the show included nearly 550 new attendees, also known as STAR delegates, at Marketplace, and 12 CTIS graduates.  There were more than 50 education seminars that touched on everything from new marketing ideas to grant applications, and with more operators registered than any previous Marketplace shows, delegates were thrilled with all the opportunities to do business. ABA also sponsored an industry leaders panel that featured eight representatives from all segments of the group travel industry – motorcoach operators, hotels, dinner theaters, museums, shopping destinations, CVBs, and motorcoach manufacturers.  The theme for the discussion was upbeat – people are traveling again and business is good. The American Bus Association just sent their last delegate home this week after an
energetic week of non- stop work combined with evenings of celebrating Chicago.

Sandy visited with some of the most interesting people in travel. Simple click on the listen buttons to enjoy a few minutes of conversation.

Don Ferrone and Sandy

SOUTHWEST AIRLINES

I would like to thank a man who has been like a father to me. I met Don Ferrone, the director of the Chicago American Sightseeing in 1994. Don's father owned a bus company in Chicago and was one of the founders of the American Sightseeing Association. Don and his brother have continued the family business in Chicago. Don was the chairman of the ASI and he introduced me to the travel industry and more specifically the Motorcoach Industry. I brought technology and created an Internet presence for the American Sightseeing Association in 1994.

Another ABA member, Billy Ray Rhyne, the president of America Charters Ltd* was also instrumental in my career growth in the industry. These two men represent some of the oldest families in the Motorcoach Industry and the tradition of family business in America. I appreciate the time they spent me mentoring and teaching me the travel and Motorcoach Industry and I am forever grateful to be a part of this marvelous industry and to those two great men.

*America Charters has evolved into the present motorcoach company from its beginnings in 1937. Bill Ray Rhyne's grandfather and father have been in the bus business since the beginning of bus travel. Billy Ray Rhyne is the 4th generation president. It was wonderful to see both Don and Billy Ray at ABA Marketplace 2005.
