TravelTalkRADIO heads to
New Orleans for the
French Quarter Festival
Voted Locals' Favorite!

Just why is the music of New Orleans so unique in all the world? NOLA born clarinetist, Tim Laughlin, gives us a history lesson on the music and musicians that are the essence of the very special sounds of the famed “Crescent City”. Tim is a regular performer at the annual French Quarter Festival in New Orleans and this year is no exception. You can catch him in Jackson Square on Saturday, April 18th starting at 11am. Tim’s also got some very special musical guests who will be accompanying him this time around. It’s a “state secret” according to Tim, so we can’t print their names here, but listen to this spellbinding  interview to find out just who you just might catch in New Orleans at the the 26th Annual French Quarter Festival!

How you would like to climb all 19,000+ feet of Mount Kilimanjaro? OK, how would you like to do it using only the strength of your upper body? That’s what Darol Kubacz did all the way to the top!

Darol lost the use of his legs while in the U.S. Army in 1992. Then, after nine years of pushing the limits of his ability as a paraplegic, he broke his neck while freestyle ski-jumping. It was shortly after that Darol created the Freedom For Life Foundation, an organization that introduces physically challenged people to outdoor sports and wilderness adventures and redefines the way they approach life.  We met Darol in Arusha, Tanzania last year after his first attempt to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. Now he’s trying to get some modern wheel chairs and mobility aids to some needy villagers in Merangu at the base of Kili. Talk about compelling stories, this is one you really should listen to.

Your Dream Trip to Africa
Starts Right Here!

As a young missionary in Tanzania, Africa, Jeremy Lowney fell in love with the continent, the country and the people.

African Safaris and
Cultural Tours

After much brainstorming about how to best raise the standard of living for local villagers near the base of Kilimanjaro, Jeremy joined with two Tanzanian partners to form a safari and cultural tours company called Wild Kingdom Safari (great name!).

Their goal was not just to bring in tourism dollars to the area but  to encourage and facilitate volunteer and charitable efforts of visitors to the region. Sure, climb Kili, go on safari, explore the Spice Island of Zanzibar. Then really experience Africa by spending a couple days helping to build a school, working on a clean drinking water project, or teaching an important life skill. Now that’s an adventure even Marlin Perkins and Jim Fowler would approve of!

MEDICAL TOURISM
IN THE UNITED STATES

Name the first true medical tourism hospital complex in the world. Are you thinking in

Medical Tourism

terms of someplace exotic like Thailand, or India, or perhaps even Singapore? The fact is, people from all over the world have been coming to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota almost since it was first founded over 100 years ago.
From heads of state and royalty to simple farmers from Iowa, the Mayo Clinic has become known

worldwide as a medical Mecca for those with serious disease and afflictions. Around this healing center has grown the Kahler Hotels with five properties ranging from luxurious penthouse suites to affordable accommodations for those on a budget. These folks invented the Healthtel concept. The Kahler folks cater to the unique physical, emotional, sensual and spiritual wishes of those that choose to make the journey to Rochester for medical care. It's just what the doctor ordered.

EcoSpeed’s new, all electric, power assist propulsion systems for bicycles

Energy2Travel is sponsored by EcoSpeed

Energy2Travel is a weekly segment devoted to energy efficient means of travel.

Brent gives us an update on the pre-production status of EcoSpeed’s new, all electric, power assist propulsion systems for bicycles. With this high quality motor and transmission package you’ll be able to power straight up the steepest hills on your favorite bicycle with literally “no sweat!” Yet, you can still have as light or as vigorous a workout as you please during your ride. Hmmm, let's see: You can stay fit, go nearly 100 miles on a charge, reverse global warming, reduce US dependence on foreign oil and all at the equivalent of about 250 to 400 mpg?! This is the absolute technology bridge you need until the affordable electric car is fully perfected. The really interesting thing about the whole modern movement to electric vehicles? We’ve been using them for over a century on a regular basis to power our locomotives, ships and even submarines.

Royal Chef

We serve up some royal pudding in a delightful interview with the man who spent 11 years cooking for the Queen of England and the Duke of Edinburgh at Buckingham Palace, and four years as private chef to Princess Diana and her family at Kensington Palace.

Chef McGrady is rightfully known as “The Royal Chef” and will be the featured “culinary rock star” at the upcoming Epicurean Escape at the Grand Lido in Negril, Jamaica June 24-28, 2009. This event may very well provide a new chapter for Chef’s book, Eating Royally. And if you’d like to royally eat your way through Scotland including an eight course dinner aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia, Chef McGrady has a culinary tour this August that will definitely appeal to you.
