SEGMENT 7
BRUCE BERGER
and
MIGUEL ANGEL DE LA CUEVA.

Author/ Photographer of
Oasis of Stone

Join Sandy as she welcomes Author, Bruce Berger to TravelTalkRADIO this week.

Gorgeous full-color photography by photographer Miguel Αngel de la Cueva, and evocative text by Bruce Berger (Almost an Island, There Was a River), bring the southern half of Baja California to life. Beginning with its unique geology, and moving on to the coastal, desert, and mountain ecosystems of Mexico’s little-known peninsula, this lushly decorated coffee-table book highlights the geology that created this “oasis of stone” and the flora and fauna that live here.

Ending with a short photo-essay on “The Newcomers” (mankind) from cave painters to the enduring rancheros, the book packs a pro-environmental punch by following the many pages of glorious natural beauty with some succinct words and images of what man’s enduring legacy might be, should we continue unchecked.

PORTERHOUSE BOB

We will be listening to Porterhouse Bob's
new CD Who Called The Cops?
throughout the entire program today!

Porterhouse Bob has shared the stage with Jim Belushi, Charles Brown, Paul Butterfield, James Cotton, The Coasters, Willie Dixon, Floyd Dixon,  The Downchild Blues Band, Charlie Musselwhite, The Persuasions, Phil Upchurch, Muddy Waters and many other fine artists. He began playing the accordion at five years old, took up the piano and organ in his early teens and spent 14 years on the road playing blues clubs and concert halls, traveling from Houston to Toronto. He is featured on keyboards and vocals.

Porterhouse Bob was born in 1947.  He claims to originate from Picayune, Mississippi, settling as a teenager in Lafayette, Louisiana, where he made a living playing the squeeze box , drawing venom from swamp snakes, and wrestling alligators.

YOU ARE GOING
TO LOVE
THIS MUSIC!!

Porterhouse Bob and Down to the Bone is about taking an inspired sound and attitude to the people, utilizing a funky barrelhouse septet of keyboard, bass, drums/rubboard, and horns. This refreshing, energetic and rowdy form of the blues is meant to put a smile on your face while you sip on an ice-cold beer or hit the dance floor with all feet flying.

Adventure, inspiration, celebration, empowerment, renewal. You'll find the all in her new book called:
100 Places Every Woman Should Go

Stephanie Elizondo Griest was first on our program promoting her book Around the Bloc, since then Stephanie has written for the New York Times, Washington Post, Latina Magazine, and numerous Travelers' Tales anthologies.

An avid traveler, she has explored 25 countries and once spent a year driving 45,000 miles across the United States, documenting its history for a website for kids called The Odyssey. She has been a Hodder Fellow at Princeton University and is currently a Senior Fellow at the World Policy Institute and a Board Member of the National Coalition Against Censorship. Visit her website at www.aroundthebloc.com.

“An amazing feat…Griest manages to impart the essence of some of the world’s most remarkable places. Reading the book is like catching the colors of a tropical sunset, a whiff of an almost tree in bloom, a hint of a melody from a late night jazz bar.”
—Elizabeth Lesser, cofounder of Omega Institute and author of Broken Open

Seeking the tranquility of a Buddhist meditation center? The raucousness of a rumba club? 100 Places Every Woman Should Go will not only inspire but compel you to hit the road—in a group, with a friend, or solo. Divided into sections such as “Powerful Women and Their Places in History,” “Places of Indulgence,” and “Places of Adventure,” this guidebook includes contact information, resources, and recommended reading. Its “Ten Tips For Wandering Women” features safety advice and pointers on how to stop departing airplanes and avoid getting tossed off Trans-Siberian trains.

Find the world’s best places to:
  • Commune with the spirits of heroines past from Mexico to Egypt
  • Race a pony across the Mongolian steppes
  • Dive for pearls in Bahrain
  • Take a mud bath in a Colombian volcano
  • Dance with Voodoo priestesses in West Africa
  • Whirl with dervishes in Istanbul
  • Devour chocolates in Brussels
  • Learn to surf in Costa Rica
  • Drink Champagne at its source in France…and much more

Segment 12. Join Sandy as she brings the program to a close. Greg Baxter, Bruce Berger and Miguel Angel de las Cueva in the studio will also help wrap up this week 's program.

Thank you Porterhouse Bob for supplying us with the greatest New Orleans style Blues. You are the best.

Travel Talk Radio believes
T
ravel is a catalyst for creating communication, peace, and commerce among the countries
and communities of the world. It's difficult to fight with a culture where you have shared a glass of refreshment,
visited their neighborhoods and experienced their customs. And besides its really fun to get out there and jump on a train,
bus or plane, walk into a new environment,
taste new interesting food and talk with the locals. Building memories that are packed
with experiences of extraordinary places, great people and exciting events are at
the cornerstone in living a fruitful and harmonious life.
