SEGMENT 8

TRACEY BERKNER

Tracy is the President of the Amador Council of Tourism and partner in B&E Hospitality. Former owner of the St. George Hotel in Volcano, CA and currently building a fine dining restaurant called TASTE with her husband Mark in Plymouth, CA, gateway to the Amador Wine country.

Segment 8

Amador County was formed in 1854, but settlers to this area began about 6 years earlier. Amador's only State Park is Chaw Se - Indian Grinding Rock park located in between Pine Grove and Volcano. Here you will find the largest area of grinding rocks created by the Miwok in the US. Amador has many things to offer people of all ages. Quaint towns with clapboard sidewalks and great shopping there is very little commercialization of our stores and all are independently owned and operated. Lodging includes historic hotels, bed & breakfasts, camping, RV parks with cabins and modern accommodations. Dining options, like the stores in Amador, are mostly independently owned and operated. Amador was home to many immigrants during the gold rush and there are still Italian boarding houses that serve family style Italian meals near the old mines. However, you can find a variety of dining options from great breakfasts to a classic tea room for lunch and fine dining for dinner. Activities range from the mild to the wild in Amador.

A visit to the local town parks give a great spot for a picnic and usually a play structure for the kids. You can visit one of the many lakes for fishing or boating activities. The elevation of Amador county ranges from 900 to 9,000 feet and therefore gives us many seasonal activities year around. In the high country is Kirkwood Ski resort with year around activities, miles of snowmobiling trails, snowshoeing and cross country skiers will find miles of back country to explore. During the summer hiking, off road vehicle recreation and horseback riding are popular - as well as rock climbing and kayaking.
Further down in elevation are great roads for cycling & hiking. Streams and rivers offer a place to cool down or cast a rod or navigate with a kayak.

Underground in Amador is some great history of our mining heritage which can be accessed through tours. One of the most popular activities in Amador is Wine tasting at over 30 Amador wineries. Specializing in Zinfandel, Rhone varietals and Italian varietals Amador wineries win 100's of medals for their high quality wines. There are 2 theater companies in Amador county that offer 4 shows a year
- during the summer outside under the stars is a favorite! Weather it is history, adventure, relaxation, food & wine or entertainment Amador is your answer for it all!
