SEGMENT 2 & 3
COLONEL JOHN
 BLASHFORD-SNELL

President of the Just a Drop organization

In 1968 Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia invited the British Army to send a team to explore and make the first descent of the infamous Blue Nile. Captain John Blashford-Snell of the Royal Engineers was commissioned to select, train and lead the 60 person party. The success of this immense expedition led to even tougher assignments, such as the first vehicle crossing of the complete Darien Gap (Central America) in 1971/2 and in 1974/5, navigating almost all the 2,700 miles of the great Zaire (now Congo) River.
Having organized and led over 100 expeditions, Blashford-Snell has built up a reputation as a practical field engineer and become one of the world's most renowned and highly respect explorers. His innovative method of negotiating white water in inflatable boats has been adopted as a worldwide sport. Today he supports numerous charities and divides his life between the concrete and green jungles.

Just a Drop charitable organization

Just a Drop raises money to build wells, install hand pumps and carry out health and sanitation programmes to give children and their families clean, accessible water.
This means children are well enough to trek long distances to collect water or to go to school, mothers don't have to stay at home to look after them and fathers are healthy enough to work. The cycle of sickness and poverty is broken and the future is immediately brighter.
Just a Drop also supports water, sanitation and health projects around the world and helps in disaster relief efforts when the most basic human need is clean water. For example:
In Cambodia, JP built 50 new wells in nine villages, restored five other wells and launched a community health programme.
In North East India, we helped the isolated village of Riangmaw by providing a new water system to pump water 60m up a slope.
In Afghanistan, JP worked in partnership with the Scientific Exploration Society to provide the Khanabad Emergency Obstetric Clinic with fresh clean water. For 2008, Just a Drop is looking into projects in Bolivia, Uganda, the Philippines, Niger and Ecuador to name a few.

It's a great luxury in life to be able
to drink clean water from a tap.

The number one family destination and worldwide destination, Orlando, is home to seven of the top ten theme parks in the world, some of the best beaches in the country and plenty of Four-Star and Four-Diamond Resorts. Approximately 50 million visitors, both domestic and international, travel to Orlando each year. Sandy and Gary talk about how the destination offers a little bit for everybody and how they have created a global brand to attract visitors from all over the world. Gary's suggestion: If you're ever looking for info and want the right info on an area, use a CVB website. According to the Orlando CVB, the city continues to grow, offering nearly 100 attractions, 112,000 hotel rooms and more than 5,300 restaurants, as well as the second largest convention center in the nation. Tourism has become the leading industry for Central Florida with approximately 50 million visitors annually and an economic impact of $29.6 billion.

KINA PAEGERT

Information Officer for the
Del Mar Fairgrounds

Ever wonder where and when the county fair started? Sandy and Kina discuss the origins of this nationwide concept and what the fifth largest county fair in the country, the San Diego County Fair, has in store for visitors. The fair is located at the Del Mar fairgrounds in Del Mar, California - just down the road from Sandy's studios. It runs until July 6.
The San Diego County Fair began in 1880 when a group of San Diegans organized an agricultural fair to bring county farmers together to share ideas, see who had the best citrus fruit, who baked the best pie and who had the fastest horse. After that first fair, the county fair was held annually with a few exceptions in various county locations until 1936, when it moved to its present Del Mar home. Each year the fair has a different theme. Each year, hundreds of consumer and trade promoters rent the Del Mar Fairgrounds facilities for home and garden shows, dog shows, antique fairs, sports shows, music festivals and much more.
