David has located the lost graves of Julian's African American founders. The 1880 census records that 33 of the 55 African Americans living in San Diego County resided in Julian.  Albert Robinson, a freed slave, started the hotel that is now the Julian Hotel, a national historic landmark.  A plaque will be placed honoring our black founders at the old  section of the cemetery.

If you know of any Black Americans who might have lived in the Julian mountain community in Southern CA in the late 1800's please contact David Lewis. He has a great story to tell and he needs help in solving a great piece of Julian history.

Cruise 101  -  Part 3 of 3

Patrick Peartree is the in house council for Travel Talk RADIO. Using his legal background, Patrick brings a fresh look at legal, safety and security issues in the industry.

Accessibility
By Patrick Peartree, TravelTalkMEDIA

Representatives of the International Council of Cruise Lines (ICCL) together with cruise line officials recently presented Cruise 101, a seminar to discuss current issues faced by industry. This three part series looks at what the cruise line industry is doing in the areas of ensuring passenger safety, environmental protection and accessibility for the physically challenged.

Modern cruise ships are truly engineering marvels, but what responsibility do foreign passenger ships have to comply with the provisions of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) when in US waters?  Cruise ships, although seen by many people as being “floating hotels”, are obviously quite different than land-based buildings and, according to a recent Supreme Court ruling, may require a completely different set of engineering principles.

In the case of Spector v. Norwegian Cruise Line Ltd, the US Supreme Court reached three important conclusions about how ADA will be interpreted and applied when it comes to foreign cruise ships in US waters. First, the court held that foreign cruise ships in US waters can be held liable to disabled passengers for discriminatory policies and practices. Second, as a general rule, US laws are presumed not to apply to the internal affairs of foreign ships in US waters, and the court held that ADA probably cannot require permanent, substantial structural changes to passenger ships if it would interfere with the “internal affairs” of the vessel. The court broadly expanded the meaning of “internal affairs” in its ruling to include a ship’s basic design and construction. Third, structural changes that could conflict with international treaties or threaten shipboard safety are likely not considered “readily achievable” and might not be required anyway.

Unfortunately, other than setting forth these broad rules and recognizing that there are limits to the structural changes that can reasonably be required on foreign ships under ADA, the Court did not provide much in the way of details. The resulting vagueness of the ruling leaves open much for interpretation. Fortunately, the cruise industry appears to already be doing a great deal to open its doors to people with physical disabilities by retrofitting older ships and designing and building new ships to meet the special-needs passenger market.

Statistics show that one in five Americans has a special need affecting their lifestyles. The International Council of Cruise Lines (ICCL), representing 16 of the largest cruise lines in the world, believes that passengers with special needs, and their families and friends, are a vital segment of the cruise industry’s growth. Moreover, a growing number of people the ADA is designed to protect see cruising as a viable vacation choice, perhaps their only practical choice to see the world. The cruise line industry has recently shown a strong desire to cater to those with disabilities, but says it must balance that desire against the cost of making radical engineering changes to existing cruise ships.

Most cruise lines now offer public areas and staterooms large enough for those dependent on wheelchairs including accessible bathroom with railings and emergency call buttons. Braille coded elevator buttons, room numbers, and restaurant menus are also in place on most ships for those with vision disabilities and guide dogs are also now widely welcomed. Many cruise lines provide a TTY, a text messaging device, that allows easier communication for folks with hearing disabilities. There are even some cruise lines that include a variety of tours in the ports they visit that can accommodate guests with special needs.

One thing to be aware of: Nearly every cruise line requests that special needs guests provide advance notification of their requirements at the time of booking to ensure that the necessary accommodations are available.

A trip aboard a modern cruise ship may in fact be the best choice for a person with special needs as well as their friends and family who wish to travel as a group. More and more in today’s competitive cruise markets, people with special needs can truly experience the world and the delights and comforts of a modern floating resort.

Founder Heidi Kόhn became gravely aware of the landmine crisis upon the tragic death of Princess Diana in 1997. Motivated by her own appreciation for the gift of life and the Princess's compassion and commitment to global demining, Kόhn began Roots of Peace in honor of Diana's memory and to ensure that her work would continue.

The roots of our organization are in the heart of California's agricultural grape growing region. We are committed to the vintner's legacy of respect for the earth and its power to give and sustain life. With the generous support of the entire California wine industry, along with many other public and private organizations, Roots of Peace is beginning to make progress toward realizing our goal of turning "Mines into Vines."

The grape vine is a symbol of celebration for the "gift of life". Whether the juicy nectare of fresh grapes, raisins, or a fine bottle of wine - the bountiful harvest represents the seeds we have in common rather those that separate us. The vine is an ancient metaphor for peace -transcending religions and political boarders. Converting "Mines to Vines" helps innocent farmers and families avoid a lethal harvest of bloodshed for future generations.

"Its so hard to believe that humans mined elephant trails  to gain military advantage. Little is known about that aspect of the war which received hardly any coverage in the western press" during all those years. And yet as you travel through the country, you see so much destruction and disruption which impacted every human being  as well as the elephants."

President
VOENA CHILDREN'S CHOIR

The VOENA Children’s Choir has made four recordings: “A Cappella America,” 2004; “A Cappella World,” 2001, “A Cappella Christmas,” 1997 and is featured on Favored Nations CD, “An Acoustic Christmas,”2004.

VOENA was founded in 1994 by Annabelle, a composer and solo artist, who arranges most of the choir’s music which includes a cappella, acoustic, original and well-known songs from around the world. Some of the choir’s repertoire comes from the members themselves who bring it from their cultural backgrounds; some she composes herself, and she also commissions new works for the choir. The music is a mixture of folk, classical, pop and sacred music and is sung in Swahili, Japanese, Russian, Navajo, Hebrew and more than a dozen other languages. Multiple percussion instruments, dance and theatrical elements round out the a cappella voice selections.

In addition to directing the performances, Annabelle adds her talents on vocals, violin and piano to the children’s voices, reminiscent of the von Trapp family immortalized in the movie “The Sound of Music.”

According to VOENA’s founder and director, Annabelle Marie, "The World Expo has always represented global harmony -- the coming together of people, nations, cultures, and voices. As a choir, VOENA seeks to embody those same ideals in song. We are thrilled with such a high honor – to represent the United States on this day and to add our voices to the world harmony.”  In addition, the choir, which is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, is accepting donations, selling VOENA t-shirts and holding fund-raising concerts. Donations are tax-deductible and may be made by calling Teresa White at (707) 751-1515. Information is also available by e-mailing voena@earthlink.net.

VOENA’s music is as diverse as their ethnic backgrounds and their songs are as unique as their many cultures. For 10 years, The VOENA children’s choir has delighted audiences from around the world with its eclectic repertoire and inventive a cappella vocal arrangements directed by Annabelle.

The internationally-acclaimed choir is made up of students from Solano County, Contra Costa County and Napa County, and from schools in the Northern California communities of Vallejo and Benicia. One student even drives from Yuba City -- two hours every week -- to attend rehearsals. Ranging in age from 7 to 18 years, the 110 members come from ethnically diverse backgrounds and most come into the choir without experience. Unlike the popular television show “American Idol” there are no auditions for the VOENA children’s choir. If a child has a desire to be in the choir he or she is accepted. For beginners who need to gain experience in finding pitch, there’s a preparatory level. The more advanced studentsare placed in the intermediate, concert and concert ensemble levels. All the students participate in one large venue per season with the concert choir level participating in all the other performances.

VOENA has given three Christmas Holiday performances at the White House and was chosen from over 600 applicants to perform at the 2005 Annual Christmas Tree Lighting and Pageant of Peace Ceremony. In 2000 VOENA completed a world tour including performances in China, Italy, Greece and Mexico. The choir performed at Carnegie Hall, the Vatican for Pope Paul II and opened for Jose Feliciano at the Mondavi Concert Series in the summer of 2004. VOENA represented the United States at the 2005 World’s Fair in Aichi, Japan.

In the Kitchen with Sandy...

This is our recipe for Belgian Lukken cookies make in a Lukken iron (Lukijyer)

This Thanksgiving Sandy brought out her Mom's recipe for Belgian Lukkens. A favorite in many countries, with essentially the same ingredients, they are called a variety of names.

You need a special cookie iron to cook these beautiful little cookies.
Sandy bought hers at a local kitchen store.

Here are the ingredients - have fun! They should turn out crispy and buttery.

6 eggs
1 pound butter
2 pounds flour
1 pound brown sugar
2 tablespoons vanilla
pinch of salt
roll into balls and place into the iron until golden brown makes over 130 cookies

Make into small balls and then put in middle of hot press. Cooking takes about 1 minute for each.

Happy Thanksgiving!
