The nation of Angola, on
the southwestern coast
of Africa, is larger
than Texas and
California combined. The

Angola is finally
recovering from decades
of war. But an estimated
one out of three
Angolans has been
displaced by war;
landmines still make
much of the countryside
dangerous. Despite its
oil wealth, Angola ranks
neat the bottom on the
UNs human development
index, 161 out of 173

About
Luanda
(courtesy of
Africa
Travel
Association)
Luanda the
capital of
Angola, was
founded in
1575 by the
Portuguese
explorer
Paulo Dias
de Novai and
retains its
heritage as
a Portuguese
colonial
city. There
are several
buildings of
historical
significance
and churches
that date
back to the
1600s. Luanda
is divided
into two
parts, the
"baxia" or
old part and
the "cidade
alta" or
new part.
The main
visitor
attractions
are the
Fortress,
the National
Museum of
Anthropology,
and the
Museum of
Slavery
along the
coast from
Luanda.
Kissama
National
Park, 70 km
south of
Luanda is
home to a
great
variety of
wildlife.
The broad
Atlantic
Coast of
Angola
offers
superb
beaches. As
an example,
the city of
Luanda is
built around
a bay, with
popular
public
beaches just
five minutes
from the
city center.
Traditional
Angolan
cuisine has
a strong
Portuguese
influence.
Local arts
and crafts
can be
purchased in
many
marketplaces
in
Angola. Items
made from
ebony,
rosewood,
straw,
malachite,
bronze and
pottery are
all
available. Other
popular
items to
purchase are
wooden masks
and
traditional
instruments
such as
marimbas,
kissanges,
xingufos,
ankle
rattles and
drums.
After many
years of
civil war,
reconstruction
of this
beautiful
country is
an immediate
priority.
With the
long range
benefits
derived from
hosting an
organization
such as the
Africa
Travel
Association,
the country
is well on
its way.

on introducing Angola as a warm and welcoming nation
Since the 50's this little country in Africa has been

With three years of peace is behind the Angolans, this small country has
gone through their time of healing and now is ready to open it's doors
to tourism.
Mr. Chingunji also talks about the
importance that his government places on developing
tourism infrastructure and the tourism product.
The fact that the Government of Angola has accorded the Africa Travel
Association's 9th Cultural & Ecotourism Symposium in LUanda Oct. 30-Nov
4. the status of a State event, is indicative of the recognition of the
key role that tourism can play in the economy of the country. the

At the southern end of the African continents western bulge, Togo sits on the Gulf of Guinea, surrounded by Burkina Faso to the north, Benin to the east and Ghana to the West.
If there had to be a popularity poll amongst countries in West Africa, Togo would probably emerge as a likely favourite. Its capital city, Lome, and the beaches that surround it, are a big draw for most vacationers. Further off the beaten track, one can experience unique village cultures, with their colourful markets and festivals. |
