Department
of Homeland
Security,
Tara Riordan

those people

sometimes
required to
provide us
with factual
information
that is not
always
pleasing to
hear, yet
she can
serve it up
in a manner
that is both
palatable
and
digestible.
She has a
great
delivery,
knows the
inside line
on what is
happening on
the national
scene, and
represents
the
Department
extremely
well. We are
always happy
to have Tara
on

I spoke
to Chris
on
Saturday,
the 3rd
of Sept.
While
spending
a good
ten
minutes
on the
phone,
he was
amazed
how long
we were
able to
keep the
connection
going.
It is a
very
hard
situation,
they are
without
all the
essentials
of
living.
Chris
spends
his time
desperately
trying
to
locate
people
and
contribute
what he
can with
boats
and
labor.
We will
try to
find him
for a
report
on what
is
happening
in his
life
these
dark
days of
recovery
in the
Gulf

In 2004
TravelTalkRADIO's
Sandy

and
Patrick
Peartree
went to
New
Orleans
to take
part in
a clean
up and
restoration
effort
at the
oldest
cemetery
in the
city
called
No. 1.
If you
remember
the film
"Easy
Rider"
you will
remember
the
scene
that was
filmed
in that
actual
cemetery.
It was
one of
our
memorable
travel
experiences.
The dead
in New
Orleans
are
buried
on top
of the
ground
Besides
being
with our
colleagues
of over
300
travel
industry
experts
we also
took a
day to
discover
the
swamps
of
Louisiana
with
CHRIS
SMITZ.
Chris is
one
passionate
guy
about
his
gators
and
swamp
tours.
He
showed
us
plantations,
gators
and
scenery
only
seen in
this
remote
area
about 50
miles
outside

SEGMENT 12
In the
Kitchen with
Sandy making
juice from
the Grape!
On the vine
and ready to
be
harvested,
Sandy takes
you into the
kitchen
where she
makes grape
juice. |
|
 |
There is
nothing
better than
discovering
the world.
And part of
that world
can be in
your own
backyard.
I have been blessed with a small plot of land in my backyard where I grow
fruit trees,
palms and
this year we
planted
23 grape
vines. The
vines are
from my
brother-in-law
and sister,
Bob and
Marcia
DeBerard.
Bob's family
has grown
grapes for
over 100
years in
Cucamonga,
California
(yes, there
really is a
Cucamonga).
In fact, at
one time,
they
harvested
over 800
tons each
year.
I have
always
wanted to
try my hand
at being a
vintner and
so here we
go!
With our
first year
under our
belt, we
realize we
have lots to
learn! In
the mean
time, we
could at
least make
grape juice!
That's not
exactly a
vintner,
more like a
juicer, but
heck I'll
take it. It
was a ball
making the
juice and we
thought you
might enjoy
the
experience
too!
Here is the
incredibly
easy recipe
that my
other big
sister,
Tisha gave
me. It is
tried and
true and a
fun
afternoon
activity!
|

|

|

|

|
The Recipe for easy delicious Grape Juice!
Heat
grapes
to a
boil.
Press or
strain
juice
through
a damp
jelly
bag or
several
layers
of
cheesecloth.
Sweeten
to taste
with
sugar.
Cool.
Ladle
juice
into
can-or-freezer
jars or
plastic
freezer
boxes,
leaving
1/2 inch
head
space.
Seal,
label
and
freeze.
I just
kept
boiling
grapes
all
afternoon.
I made 3
gallons
my first
harvest
and
still
have a
few
bushels,
buckets
(or
whatever
they
call
grape
containers)
to
harvest!
I would
recommend
old
clothes,
great
upper
body
strength
and find
a potato
masher
to help
get all
the
juice
out of
the
cheesecloth.
I went
through
3
packages
of
cheesecloth.
If you
do much
more
consider
getting
a grape
press to
help
with the
pressing.
By the
way,
this is
not an
ad for
Coca
Cola,
it's
just an
old
farm'n
shirt I
wear in
my
fields.

As
always
we
dedicate
our
little

Robert
H.
DeBerard.
He was
passionate
about
growing
his
grapes
and
loved to
share
his
stories.
We still
miss him
very
much.
