Billy Cross is a successful businessman, owner of multiple nightclubs and the brains behind the brawn of internationally known Australian male revue, Thunder from Down Under.

Coming from a modest background as a bricklayer, Cross found his calling when he injured himself playing in the Queensland A-grad rugby league. Unable to play, Cross went on to pursue other interests. As a child, Cross envisioned himself being John Travolta, a ladies man that could easily get on stage and dance all night. His dream became a reality when he created the successful male revue Thunder from Down Under in 1988.

Cross went on to develop the Australian male dance troupe, Thunder from Down Under, into an international phenomenon that has toured in 15 countries and has entertained over six million women. For 15 years, Thunder has been touring and is now performing at their permanent home in Las Vegas at the Excalibur Hotel & Casino.

Cross filmed the casting process of the Australian group entitled, Strip Search. The concept was so brilliant it has been sold to numerous other countries including France, Germany, Poland, Canada, South American, and now the United States. Billy Cross and VH1’s Rachel Perry toured the United States in search of wholesome, attractive guys to compete for one of seven contracts as a member of a male strip revue. The seven winners of the VHI reality series Strip Search became American Storm, landing on the world-famous Las Vegas strip in the Crazy Girls showroom at the Riviera Hotel & Casino.

Aside from his business pursuits, Cross is also a strong supporter of Can Teen, an Australian organization devoted to young people living with cancer. He currently lives in Australia with his wife Jackie and their two young sons.

Don’t be Fueled!
by Patricia Kutza

The shortening daylight hours are signaling the approach of autumn.  That's the time many Bay Area denizens head out for the highway and into the countryside to revel at the fall color display.  For some folks, though, escalating prices at the gas pump may temper those impulses.

This may be a great time to give the gas guzzlers (and our air) a break.  Instead why not test-drive what may be the conventional transportation of the not-too-distant future:  hybrid vehicles and their more limited, but still environmentally friendly cousins, electric cars and scooters?

EV Rental Cars (www.evrental.com) is the company that pioneered this environmentally conscious concept nationwide.  You can rent such hybrids as the Toyota Prius, the Honda Civic GX (uses natural gas), the Honda Civic and the Ford Escape (SUV) at locations near San Francisco and Oakland airports.

Scoot around downtown San Francisco in a GEM (Global Electric Motors) car, courtesy of Electric Time Car Rentals (www.etcars.com) located at Fisherman's Wharf.  These cars, with a limited speed range, are a fixture of many communities in the Sacramento region, such as Davis and the North Natomas neighborhood in Sacramento where planned street design has made them the ideal method for transportation.  Electric Time also offers a neat feature, a GPS historical audio tour where drivers, with a choice of three different routes, are given clear directional instructions about where to turn and what to look for around each corner.

Try touring at an even slower pace on a Segway, an electric scooter.  Last year I sampled the Segway at Amelia Island Plantation in Florida (http://www.aipfl.com/).  Amelia's president, Jack Healan, is an ardent environmentalist, and uses the Segway to navigate this expansive and very beautiful property.  Before venturing on a guided tour, all Segway-users are given instruction that includes test-rides to get accustomed to this balance-driven vehicle.

While I recommend visiting Amelia for its amenities (sand, surf, renowned annual tennis tournament and fabled spa and golf facilities), you can try out the Segway much closer to home. San Francisco Electric Tour Company (http://www.sfelectrictour.com/) offers Segway guided tours in San Francisco and Sausalito. .  Along with weight limitations, some physical restrictions apply.  According to their website: "Riders must be able to easily and quickly step on and off the Segway without assistance, which requires physical abilities similar to climbing and descending stairs without any assistance or use of a handrail. Rider must be able to operate the steering control with his or her left hand."

ADMIRAL
WILLIAM HARRIS

During the evacuation of Saigon, Admiral Harris served on the
USS Midway as the Senior Officer overseeing the evacuation.

Admiral William Harris discusses
his life and his experience on the Midway.  Hear his interview in
this segment.

Meet Admiral William Harris. He was skipper on the Midway. Later while serving in a higher capacity, he was asked to return to the Midway not as the Skipper but as the Senior Officer overseeing the Saigon evacuation. Much like former Governors, Presidents, Senators, etc, being called by their previous titles, it is proper and courteous to address him by Admiral.

This photo was taken on the first of the two days that Saigon was evacuated.

No carrier has the history or the crew to match the Midway.  A 47-year odyssey that spanned the end of WWII and Desert Storm, an odyssey in which more than 225,000 Americans took part.

This day in History, (from the History Channel)
April 29, 1975
Operation Frequent Wind begins

Operation Frequent Wind, the largest helicopter evacuation on record, begins removing the last Americans from Saigon.

The North Vietnamese had launched their final offensive in March 1975 and the South Vietnamese forces had fallen back before their rapid advance, losing Quang Tri, Hue, Da Nang, Qui Nhon, Tuy Hoa, Nha Trang, and Xuan Loc in quick succession. With the North Vietnamese attacking the outskirts of Saigon, U.S. Ambassador Graham Martin ordered the commencement of Frequent Wind.

In 19 hours, 81 helicopters carried more than 1,000 Americans and almost 6,000 Vietnamese to aircraft carriers offshore. Cpl. Charles McMahon, Jr. and Lance Cpl. Darwin Judge, USMC, were the last U.S. military personnel killed in action in Vietnam, when shrapnel from a North Vietnamese rocket struck them as they were guarding Tan Son Nhut Airbase during the evacuation. At 7:53 a.m. on April 30, the last helicopter lifted off the rook of the embassy and headed out to sea. Later that morning, North Vietnamese tanks crashed through the gates of the Presidential Palace. North Vietnamese Col. Bui Tin accepted the surrender from Gen. Duong Van Minh, who had taken over from Tran Van Huong (who only spent one day in power after President Nguyen Van Thieu fled). The Vietnam War was over.
