Question
Hi Sandy, Hope things are going great with your business.

I thought of you tonight as I am trying to book a trip to NY (where my family and I have never been).  I have a show I need to attend, and am not much of a traveler.  So I am having my family come as support.  Only problem is that I have found that hotels are very expensive and my husband is not much of a big city kind of person.  He will have the kids (7 and 4) for the 2 days while I am at the show (Javits Center).  I am trying to keep him happy and busy while I am doing the show, but have also heard that NY is a very busy city and you really have to watch your kids.  Would you have any suggestions on where to stay that would be good for kids?  I don’t mind taking a bus or train or subway into the city, if I know the kids and hubby will be safe and having fun while I am working.  We are only planning to stay for 5-6 nights.  And depending on where we stay, may drive to PA, Boston or DC for a day trip.  Since you are the expert, I was hoping to get some tips from you, if you don’t mind my asking.
I was planning to book everything tonight, but think I will wait until tomorrow.  I want to make a good choice for my family first, and then me second.  Does that make any sense?  Looking for a good price and the best family safe place to stay.  Whatever suggestions you might have would be appreciated.
Hope to talk again soon.
Warm Regards,
Joan Colvin

Answer
Hi Joan,
Great to hear from you.
First off, I think you will find NY a wonderful city even for your family.
There is a Mariott Hotel that is not too far from the Javitz Center and would make a great central place for all of you to call home for the week.

I also have a company that I work with called Metro-Home. This is an interesting way to travel - you can rent an apt that is fully furnished, washer dryer, kitchen cable.
You will find the pricing really competitive and you can pick out the district you want to stay at. You can explain to them where your show is and they can hook you up with something appropriate. Their phone number is: 800.987.1235  You can ask them about a great area for the family. They will help you choose.
I like this arrangement because you are now a New Yorker living in New York! I have used them personally twice and it is so much fun. On every corner, you will find grocery stores, restaturants etc. It's a great experience.
I found NY to be fun, safe and police are so friendly. I know you will have a ball.

Let me know if we are going down the right path here. I went to see if I had any free tickets in NY but unfortunately, I gave them all away!
Usually I have so many freebies around, but nothing in NY right now. If I did, they would be yours.

Thanks Joan and hope you are enjoying success with your wonderful character bear.
warm regards,
Sandy

Question
Hi.  I am in south Florida. Boca Raton.  Can I get your show? I am traveling to India in November.  Will I need to get any vaccinations?  What should I do to stay healthy? Any suggestions for jet lag related issues traveling to and from?
Thank you,
Elizabeth

Answer
HI Elizabeth,

Thanks for your note. I believe the only way to hear our program in Boca Raton at the moment is online. You can go to our Web site at:
http://www.traveltalkradio.com/TTR_760kfmb.html on Sunday mornings and click onto our TalkStar Radio network logo on the top right corner. Also you can listen to archives by going to our ARCHIVES section on the Web site. We are working on getting stations to pick us up all over the country (world) if you have a favorite talk stations, let us know and we will knock on their doors.

India in November! Wonderful. I am sending you to the Center for Disease Control and more specifically to the information regarding vaccinations and how to stay healthy on your trip to India. http://www.cdc.gov/travel/indianrg.htm

And finally Jet lag problems. We have been given a product that is totally natural and made in Sweden. I will send you samples so that you can see if you like something like this. Please send me your address and we will get this in the mail to you asap.
If you could let us know how you feel about it that would be great too.

Personally, I sleep as much as I can on the plane. I eat very little and I drink as much water as possible. I try to get my mind in a meditative state so that I can relax as much as possible. From the clothing that I wear to small soft pillow that makes me feel close to my own bed are what make me travel the best. I also get lots of exercise. I am an exercise nut and feel like it attributes to my entire health and well being.

Stay in touch and looking forward to hearing from you again.

Question
Sandy, help me!! Where did you go? Your not on KFMB anymore??? Where can I listen to your show?? I miss you!! You show in San Diego was really a good one and because of you I traveled more! Please let me know how I can tune in!! (June 05)
Rich San Diego, CA

Answer
HI Rich,
It was great to hear from you! Yes, we left KFMB because we wanted to syndicate our program and grow beyond what they could offer us. We are now being distributed by talkstar radio network out of Florida. They have a very interesting concept and even though it is a very new channel for us, we are very happy with the service and attention they are giving our program.  We are on in 7 other radio stations around the country but not yet in San Diego. I am sure we will get there soon. But the good news is that you can hear us online every Sunday from 9 - 11am pacific time on the Web at
www.TravelTalkRADIO.com and click into This Week's Program.
I hope you check out the online streaming, I think you will be very impressed. It sounds like regular radio!

Question
Sandy
I wanted to surprise my girlfriend with a spa day (for couples) in Baja california or southern california.  Someplace we could go overnight with some great food.  Ever heard of such a place?
Craig
Casey

Answer
HI Craig,
If you want a great spa day for you and girl friend there are many to choose from here in Southern Ca and Baja.

How much did you want to spend and what kind of spa do you like? The La Costa
http://www.lacosta.com/ in Carlsbad is incredible, Deepak Chopra has a center there and is fantastic if you like to do some mind body soul wellness!
Also the Four Season in Aviara have a great spa too.  http://www.fourseasons.com/aviara/
There are spa’s in Baja and Southern CA that have the same owners, The Golden Door http://www.goldendoor.com/  is famous both in Escondido and across the border near Tecote. http://www.rancholapuerta.com/
Where will you be coming from and would you rent a car?
Sorry for all the questions, but there are so many aspects to choosing a great destination.
Take a look at the few I sent you and see what you think.
All the best.
Sandy

Question
I am a high school math teacher looking for an opportunity to travel during the summer in the United States and perform community service at the same time.  Can you recommend  travel programs where teachers get compensated for travel/community service?  I will like to take along my 16 year old son as well.  If you cannot give me a referral, could you suggest someone who could? Thank you for your time.
Debbie  D.

Answer
Hi Debbie,
What a terrific way to spend your summer with your son. There are many programs out there for foreign based travel but unfortunately, doing this in the US is harder to find.
I found a few that you might want to explore.
The Education Program of the United States Institute of Peace
http://www.usip.org/ed/

Jobs in Education:
http://www.jobsineducation.co.uk/search.cgi?k=instructors summer needed ccusa camp&n=220&cat=10,14,17,19,20,21,39&t=permanent&a=7

USA Freedom Corps
http://www.usafreedomcorps.gov/

I have tons of service opportunities abroad that I have found, but really not much for the service in the USA. Interesting!
We have many links on our Web site at
www.traveltalkradio.com. and click onto the Travel Tips section.
Getting paid is another challenge as there are many volunteer organizations that use tourists for services. Best of luck! Let me know what you come up with!

Question
Hello Sandy,
I'm interested in knowing if you recommend the Sanoviv after your stay. I'm thinking about going for lap-band surgery and health retreat. Do you recommend the health retreat? Does it look like a clean- well run facility?
Thank you.
Cindy

Answer
Hi Cindy,
I have been to Sanoviv 3 times and have always been very impressed. I have met many of the doctors and I would highly recommend using the facilities. They are extremely clean as they do not have any toxins anywhere in the area and their water system is purified there on the property. NASA did research in the area and came up with the fact that there is a sort of vortex right there on the coast and they say it has some of the best air quality too.
You will be impressed. Please let me know if you decide to go.
Warm regards,
Sandy

Question
Hello Sandy, I often listen to your radio slot with Talk Sport (UK) on my way to work. It is through this knowledge that I feel you may be able to assist me with a problem. I have been contacted by a company. Soho Vacations 587 East S.R. 434 Suite 300  Longwood Florida 32750
They state a licence number as ST35770
On offer is a bargin holiday including Orlando, Daytona and a Bahamas cruise. I am trying to find out more about this company and any validations that may be available.I would be very grateful if you could confirm anything about this company to me.Thank you for your assistance in anticipation.

HI Phil,
Thanks for your email and thank you for listening!
I did some research on SOHO Vacations and can’t find anything too positive about them.

Here is a forum of running thoughts by clients:

From what I have found . . . I would be careful. Sounds like things can go right, but many people have had problems with extra charges and timely manner to get refunds.

I hope I have helped a bit. Please let me know what you end up doing.

Question
Hello Sandy,
My husband and I will be in Boston for 2 days next month, as part of our
New England vacation. We were wondering what you would recommend, as far
as what to see? We are interested in some kind of water tour, and also a
city tour. We would really appreciate your input!
We are really excited about this vacation, have been wanting to go and see
the Fall folliage for some time. We'll be flying into Manchester, New
Hampshire, and will also be spending a week in Maine. We can't wait!
We love your show,
Yvonne and Ben

Answer
Hi Yvonne,
Great to hear from you and thank you so much for listening.

We were just in Boston when I spoke to the board of directors of the International Conventions and Visitors Bureaun in July. We took the extra time we had and explored the city. We had a ball. I was amazed at the uniqueness of Boston. I really didn't expect it would have so many contrasting sites within the city. The old buildings and churches nestled up to the sky scrapers was really eye catching. We stayed at the Sheraton, the largest hotel in Boston. I believe we were on the 24th floor. The view was awesome and we were able to get around very well.

From the hotel we walked to where the Duck Tours http://www.bostonducktours.com/ pick up the tourists. The tour is a combination city and bay tour. The vehicles are amphibious and authentic WWII war vehicles. We had a ball and I must say the best part was the tour guide. If you decide to go, please make sure you ask for Major Bombshell to be your tour guide. She is incredibly entertaining. We absolutely loved her. If you do get the opportunity to take her tour, give her our best.

Also, http://www.traveltalkradio.com/archives_july18_04.html is the address of the Boston show we produced. Since the show is older than 30 days, we take the archives off the Web site, but if you like, please email me your address and I will send a CD of the Boston show. We did our live broadcast from CHEERS bar and enjoyed Faneuil Hall Market and all it's history.

You are going to love New Hampshire especially during Fall foliage. Have a safe and wonderful trip.

Let me know if we can be of any more help and please send your address and I will get the Boston show to you. Just slip it into your Cd player in the car and make believe it's Sunday morning! :).
Sandy

Question
Marrion Moir from Ontario asks:
Where would I go to find out what kinds of immunization I need to visit a foreign country? I am 65 years old and want to be sure I am protected.

Answer
Hi Marrion,
Great question! You did not mention your destination however, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is a great resource for finding answers to travelers vaccination concerns in every part of the world. If you go to http://www.cdc.gov/travel/destinat.htm you will find an easy to use interface. Simply click onto the part of the world you wish to travel and the vaccination information along with other health issues will be available to you.

One thing to remember, travelers who do not have the required vaccinations upon entering a country may be subject to vaccination, medical follow-up, and/or isolation and in a few countries, unvaccinated travelers are denied entry.

Also as a precaution, before going abroad, learn what medical services your health insurance will cover overseas, as well as any policy exclusions. For example, I know you are in Canada, but in the United States, the Social Security Medicare program does not provide coverage for hospital or medical costs outside the United States.

Have a great trip Marrion!

Question
I am traveling to Ecuador in November. I need to know what I need to buy and take with me to be able to use the electrical system while I am there for a laptop computer, charging a digital camera, and other purposes. I haven’t been able to find out if I will need an adaptor, a converter or a surge protector. Can you tell me?
W.Stumbaugh

Answer
Hi W. Stumbaugh
The electricity in Ecuador is the same as in the United States and Canada 110 V 60 Hz. Many hotels are equipped with both 110 and 220-volt options. Many older Hotels and Haciendas do not allow for polarized plugs, appliances with uneven, straight pins, or 3 prongs may require an adapter. These adapters are available at hardware stores throughout the country.

Hope this helps!

Have a wonderful trip.

Question
Going on a S.A. cruise in Dec. What is the weather like and how is travel around the Horn?
E

Answer
Hi E.
Thanks for your note.
The southernmost point of the Americas is a gray rugged rock, enduring in a notoriously weather-beaten spot. With luck, your ship can cruise close by this rocky promontory, which has marked the passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean for centuries.

Also the weather should be the most awesome in Dec and Jan. You picked a great month to travel around the Horn. It could get into the 80's or as low as the 60's but will probably be about 78 degrees Fahrenheit during your trip.

Question
Sandy, what about the air on airplanes? 3 out of 5 times I travel, I get sick. Is it the air that is being recycled? Is it pure? What can I do?
Pat

Answer:
HI Pat,
That is a great question. There is plenty of controversy about this problem. Some feel there exists no problem with recycled air on airplanes. Suggesting that sickness occurs from being exposed to other sick passengers and long exposures to illness during long flights. Others feel very different, believing that the recycled air is hazardous and can be regulated by the flight crew.  One suggestion is to ask attendants on your plane to
ask the pilot for "full utilization of air.'" If you get a blank look and they don't understand the term "full utilization," you might put it in easy straight forward english, asking for less recycled air and more fresh air, in other words, the same air quality breathed in the cockpit. (Pilots are reported as getting 10% more oxygen during a flight then passengers.)

Also if you are more susceptible to illness, you might consider not using the blankets and pillows on the plane, bring your own or bring covers for the pillows.

Question:
We are thinking of taking the children to California. Where is the best place for family-oriented activities?
Jane in Wisconsin

Answer:
I love this question. I was born and raised in Southern CA but lived in San Francisco Bay area for 20 years, the last 7 years I am now in San Diego area. I have seen and lived in much of California and have to admit I am very partial to the San Diego region as being one of the best places in the world for children.

San Diego gets high scores for beaches and the San Diego Zoo, whichis world reknown. SeaWorld is a must as the Wild Animal Park is grand if you are interested in seeing a celebration of African animals. Balboa Park in the middle of San Diego city is fabulous place to enjoy the diversity of people from all over the world who know live in this area. Legoland is in Carlsbad, which by the way is a great place to visit with it's small shops and quaint village. This spring the USS Midway will open it's doors as a wonderful museum that will steadily grow with memoriabilia of all the service men and women who served on the aircraft carrier. One last point, Los Angeles, is up the street a mere 2 hours by car, Amtrak goes right to Union Station in the center of LA. There are stops to wonderful beaches on the way including Disneyland in Anaheim.

By the way. stop by www.sandiego.org, you will find an abundance on information on the region. Have a wonderful trip!
best regards,
Sandy

Question:
Will be going to Maui mid Oct, should I book now or do you think fares will be better in a couple of months? Thanks.
Linda in Encinitas

Answer:
HI Linda,
Thanks for the email.
It is difficult to find good discount airfares to Hawaii.
Early reservations is the best way to save money. Have you gone yet to Hawaiian Airlines?
http://www.hawaiianairlines.com
I was impressed with their pricing. For an example if you wanted to leave with 10 days from now, your best price I could find was $1038. If you reserve now for Oct you could pay less than half. And then on the Hawaiianairlines.com Web site I saw flights for $139 each way! (Don't know who you get those, but it is worth looking around on the Web site).
Hope this helps Linda,
Have a wonderful trip and please let know if you need any more help.

Question:
Please advise me of what to use for motion sickness that I may experience on a cruise I am about to take.
Thank you,
Michael

Answer:
HI Michael,
Wonderful to hear you are taking a cruise. You will have a ball.
I too need motion sickness protection so you have asked the right person!

I would totally recommend SCOPACE. The astronauts use SCOPACE and in fact in a study
conducted for NASA comparing oral and topical scopolamine, the patch was found to
be one-half as effective as oral tablets in preventing motion sickness.

This is a prescription that your doctor can get for you. Let me tell you how I was able get SCOPACE.
What I did was print out the information from the SCOPACE web page (
www.scopace.com) and I took it to my doctor.

He was happy to give me my prescription. What you will find out is that your pharmacy will most likely have to order SCOPACE and you will be able to pick it up in a few days.It really works well, I do not feel tired nor does it make you fell “fuzzy”

Let me know if you use it and what you think.

Otherwise you can always get the wrist bands on the ship, although I would not recommend them like I do SCOPACE.
Take care Michael and have a wonderful cruise.
