HANACIK TO TAKE POSITION ON STATE LEVEL COMMITTEE.

The manager of the Lake Havasu City Convention and Visitors Bureau’s Visitor Center Kathie Hanacik has been asked to join the Arizona Office of Tourism’s Visitors Services Advisory Committee.

The committee meets three times a year and discusses the needs of the 90 visitor centers recognized by the AZOT in Arizona. The group is also the body that evaluates each center to determine that each center continues to meet the criteria to remain sanctioned by the state and also reviews applications for centers wishing to be recognized by the state.

“They needed a visitor center manager to sit on their committee,” Hanacik said from the center, located in the English Village. “So they called me and asked if I would be willing to sit on the board.”

Hanacik said she was honored by the request. “It came as a surprise. I’m excited to be involved in the state office. Only one visitor center manager sits on the committee, the rest are directors for CVB’s and so forth,” she said.

LHCCVB Presidents Dan Cunning said Hanacik’s appointment proves her dedication to tourism. “She does a great job at our visitor center, and for the state to recognize that by putting her on the committee, that means a lot,” Cunning said. “Anything that brings more attention to Lake Havasu City is a good thing,” added Cunning.

Hanacik’s first meeting in her term will be in November.

CVB UNVEILS NEW WEBSITE

Where fun is always in season. That’s just one of the images being conveyed by the Lake Havasu City Convention & Visitors Bureau as they unveil their new website at www.golakehavasu.com. Work and Play go Hand in Hand. The new site will help streamline contact with tourism and media professionals by giving the world a glimpse of what our beautiful city has to offer.

Visitors to the site have instant access to CVB staff through forms to request Visitor’s Guides, Meeting Planner Packets and Press Kits. Convention professionals can submit a Request for Proposal (RFP) online.

On the lighter side, the community and visitors alike can keep up with Calendar of Events, local attractions, recreational guides and much more.

“This is a great website,” said CVB President Dan Cunning. “This website is attractive to the eye, easy to navigate and contains a wealth of information.”

“We wanted to keep the site simple yet aesthetically pleasing. We didn’t want any fancy flash pages or anything like that. We wanted it to be easy for users to check out the page and get the information they need,” Cunning said. “Frontline Graphics did an excellent job of that.

The total cost for the site was $13,400. “That is for more than just the site,” said CVB Promotions Manager Jarrod Lyman. “That cost also includes the standard hosting fee, unlimited tech support, maintenance and more. And this site, with its versatility and updatability, will be around for a long time.”

Cunning said the creation of the site has been a collaborative effort. “All of the staff has been deeply involved in the development of this site over the past nine months. Everyone has had a lot of input, and the people will also have the ability to update their areas,” he said.

The site was a team effort between Tim & Christine Hodge of Frontline Graphics Web Design and the staff at the CVB. “They really did an impressive job,” Cunning said.

CUNNING ELECTED TO EXECUTIVE BOARD OF
NATIONAL SPORTS COMMISSION

LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. – Lake Havasu Convention and Visitors Bureau President Dan Cunning has been elected to the Board of Directors of the National Association of Sports Commissions.

Cunning attended the annual meeting of the commission in Jacksonville, Florida last week. The agenda for the gathering called for the nomination and subsequent election of the executive board. “I was honored to even be nominated,” said Dan Cunning. “I was even more honored that my peers elected me to the board.”

Cunning’s fellow directors include members of sports and tourism commissions from around the country, including Disney’s Wild World of Sports. “This is a great opportunity not for just me but the city as well,” Cunning said. “This will give our city the notoriety to help attract world class sporting events to the city.”

Cunning said tournaments, such as the upcoming Triple Crown Sports Softball Tournament, bring lots of families and dollars to the city. “Many people come to take part in the tournaments, either to help put them on or to compete. That’s a lot of heads in beds,” he said.

Cunning’s term on the NASC expires in 2007.

CITY GEARS UP FOR MAJOR SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT

LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. - The city is preparing for a major softball tournament this weekend.

Triple Crown Sports, which puts on numerous sporting events across the country, plans on making the Lake Havasu Summer Kick-off Fast-Pitch Softball tournament an annual event in Lake Havasu City.

“This is a huge event,” said Lake Havasu Convention and Visitors Bureau Promotions Manager Jarrod Lyman. “We’re looking at a field of 33 teams, 28 of those teams are from outside of the area.”

With that many teams participating in the tournament, which is a qualifier for the Triple Crown World Series in Park City, Utah, in July, the CVB is expecting a lot of people to come to town. “We are using a modest estimate of 900 people,” Lyman said. “It could very well be more than that. Either way, that’s a lot of room nights and a lot of money that will be spent in town.”

The tournament is so large that fields all over town will be the venue for the games. “The teams will play at SARA Park, Rotary Park and the Lake Havasu High School was good enough to allow the use of their field as well,” Lyman said.

Triple Crown Sports is also making a generous donation to the city. “They are donating two Portolite 6” regulation game mounds to the Lake Havasu City Parks and Recreation Department,” Lyman said. The pitching mounds are valued at about $800 each, and will be used by the little league and other events in the city.

For game times and more information, log on to the Triple Crown Sports website, at www.triplecrownsports.com.

TRIATHLETES TO BATTLE BY THE BRIDGE

(LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz.) – On Saturday April 24, 2004 the best collegiate athletes in the nation will converge on Lake Havasu City to be tested through a triumvirate of daunting tasks at the USAT Collegiate National Championships Triathlon. Making its Havasu debut, the triathlon is expected to bring in over 800 competitors for the competition.

This Event will qualify all athletes who will compete as members of Team USA at the World University Games. Because of the prestige of this event, many of the athletes from the region came to Lake Havasu during this past spring break in order to get a chance to see the area, observe the course, and train for the upcoming championships.

Athletes start the triathlon at 7:00am. The first leg is a 1500 meter swim in the channel and under the London Bridge, then a very hilly 40K bike over London Bridge and through Lake Havasu City. Once their bike tour is completed, competitors will run 10K starting on the Island using the jogging path, then under the bridge to the gala finish line at London Bridge Beach Park. Top finishers will finish in under two hours at London Bridge Beach Park.

With over 800 athlete competing in the 1500 meter swim/40 kilometer bike/10K run, there will be some inevitable congestion. Residents and guests of Lake Havasu City are urged to plan their trips accordingly. Those leaving town going North should enter Highway 95 at Palo Verde, those going south should enter Highway 95 at Smoketree. The channel will be closed to boat traffic until 8:30am on Sat., April 24. McCulloch will be closed until 9:00am and Lake Havasu Blvd between McCulloch and Industrial will be congested until 10:30am. London Bridge Road will be open to local traffic only until 10:30am. London Bridge Beach Park will remain open but parking may be difficult and access restricted.

The host hotel for the event is the Ramada Inn, with overflow rooms at the Island Suites. Many athletes will also be staying at Crazing Horse Campgrounds for the event.

Tucson Racing and Lake Havasu City will be hosting a beach party gala on Saturday night after the race at London Bridge Beach where awards will be handed out to the winners.

Lake Havasu City is no stranger to high-profile triathlons, having hosted the Pan American Games Triathlon Qualifier in 1999 with the winners of that event both Olympians in 2000 and the Tri-America Triathlon in May of 2002.

The Collegiate National Championships is being managed by Jonathan Grinder of Tucson Racing Inc., a nationally recognized event management team based in Tucson, AZ. For more information on the event, visit www.tucsonracing.com, email jhgrinder@tucsonracing.com .

CHOIR BOYS POKER RUN BENEFIT
APRIL 3, 2004

They wear leather from head to toe and they show their colors with pride.  They all ride Harleys.  They’ve all been involved with crime.  In fact, most of them have made a life long career of being involved with criminals.  Sounds a little ominous, doesn’t it?

But it’s probably not what you think.  Every member of this club, the Choir Boys, is either an active or retired law enforcement officer.  Founded in Southern California in 1991, several regions in the southwest have been formed.

What was originally intended simply as a club for Police Officers to ride Harley’s together quickly became a non-profit fund raising machine.  They pride themselves as being a family oriented, law abiding motorcycle club with a very special mission.  The funds they raise primarily go to assist the family members of fellow fallen officers, in addition to other charitable causes.

On April 3, 2004, the Arizona River Region of the Choir Boys, joined by other regions of

Choir Boys from all over the western states, will hold the “Ridin’ the River Poker Run.”

All of the proceeds of this event will support the families of fallen officers and various community charities.

The Choir Boys are in need of community support in the form of sponsorships.  Sponsors will be provided with some or all of the following, depending on the size of the contribution:  recognition in the local media, on the event banner, and on the Arizona Choir Boys web page as a sponsor for 2004, and more.

Police Officers put their life on the line every day.  Every officer hurt or killed in the line of duty is a father, brother, mother, sister, son, or daughter.  You can enable the Choir Boys help these families while having some fun at the same time!

There is one warning however – anyone sponsoring this event is likely to be appreciated in a way that is totally unexpected.  The families and charities assisted by the Choir Boys are unbelievably grateful, and in return, the Choir Boys are abundantly grateful to the businesses that actually make this assistance to those that are in need possible.

Participants in the event will receive a free Ride pin, discount buffet ticket at the Blue Water Casino (first 200), Ride shirts, Arizona Choir Boy ride patch, and other club souvenirs will be for sale.

For more information concerning sponsorship or registration for the event, please contact Lou Boozell (928) 453-3933, or log on to www.azchoirboys.org\regionthree.

Touring California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, and Idaho, the band’s performances encompass a variety of venues, from high school gyms and city parks to formal concert halls.  Its instrumentation includes woodwinds, brass, percussion, keyboards, electric/string bass, and vocalists.

The band’s repertoire includes standard concert band/wind ensemble literature, orchestral transcriptions, military marches, jazz and pop arrangements, Broadway excerpts, and patriotic songs.  Its widely varied programs offer something for everyone, making the Concert Band an excellent choice for family entertainment.

WinterBlast XV – Public Display will take place on Saturday, February 14.  Originally developed by the WPA as a “thank you” to the community for hosting their members only conference, the WinterBlast public display has easily become one of Havasu’s most highly anticipated events.   Staged at Havasu Island’s Spectator Point, the fireworks extravaganza can be viewed from several vantage points throughout the city, including Rotary Park and Bridgewater Channel.

“Concluding the largest pyrotechnic conference west of the Mississippi, the annual WinterBlast show serves as a public debut for many of the latest technological innovations in this field,” said WPA President Kief Adler.  “As one of the industry’s key events, this is where we get to test the latest effects and gain knowledge, artistry and creativity.”

“Pyrotechnic delegates from across North America look forward to WinterBlast each year,” continues Adler.  “For many industry members, this event represents their first chance to stage new designs and products before a public forum.”  As a result, WinterBlast audiences are some of the first to view many of the unique and pioneering works of explosive art.

“We are so pleased to welcome the WPA delegates,” said Dan Cunning, President/CEO of the Lake Havasu City Convention & Visitors Bureau.  “This is such a great event for the entire community – in addition to being good business it is a great event for our residents and guests.”
