Sandy Dhuyvetter
presents Deadwood South Dakota including Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial Mountain.
DEADWOOD, South Dakota
Deadwood puts you and your family in the middle of history. The entire city of Deadwood is a national historic landmark. Authentic re-creation of turn-of-the-century street lamps light the way through accurately, carefully restored architecture. The famous and infamous have left their marks here. Follow their footsteps as you explore the beauty and history of this one-of-a-kind Wild West town.
Known for its hit series on Cable an into its 3rd season. Deadwood hosts the Kool Deadwood Nites August 24 - 27, 2006.
Relive the 50s and 60s with our Kool Deadwood Nites celebration August 24 27. This four-day event features over 500 classic cars with parades, show and shines, classic car auction and two days of absolutely FREE concerts featuring the finest entertainers.
In the graveyard you will find The graves of Wild Bill Hickok (shot in a saloon here during a card game) and Calamity Jane are in Deadwood's Boot Hill. Gambling casinos, legalized in 1989, now dominate Deadwood's economy.
Mount Rushmore National Memorial:
Carved into the southeast face of a mountain in South Dakota are the faces of four presidents, a memorial to American history.
The faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln look down from their stony heights and remind everyone that even the impossible is possible.
The idea was conceived in 1923 to attract more people to the Black Hills of South Dakota with colossal carvings of western heroes.
Mount Rushmore National Memorial, located about a half hour by car from Deadwood, is something you don't want to miss. After about two years of working on Jefferson, the granite was found to be badly cracked and Jefferson had to be blasted off the mountain. He was started again on the left side of Washington.
Crazy Horse Memorial, 30 minutes from Mt Rushmore:
The worlds largest sculpture, now in progress, is located in the Black Hills of South Dakota on US Highway 16/385 just 17 miles southwest of Mount Rushmore. The work was begun in 1948 by sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski at the request of Native Americans. Korczak died in 1982. His wife, Ruth, and their family continue the project working with the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation.
There are many fascinating stories in the life of Crazy Horse, the life of Korczak Ziolkowski, and the work of the Ziolkowski family and the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation to carry on the mountain carving and the educational and cultural goals of Crazy Horse Memorial.
Korczak Ziolkowski was Sculptor Gutzon Borglum's assistant at Mt. Rushmore.
Crazy Horse is to be carved not so much as a lineal likeness, but more as a memorial to the spirit of Crazy Horse -- to his people. With his left hand thrown out pointing in answer to the derisive question asked by a white man, "Where are your lands now?" he replied, "My lands are where my dead lie buried."
