Nothing is stopping New Orleans...nothing !
Sandy Dhuyvetter
presents New Orleans
New Orleans, Louisiana.
Taking a spontaneous trip to New Orleans was one of the easiest decisions TravelTalkRADIO has made this year. New Orleans is one of
our favorite destinations and it has always been more about the people,
the music and the rich history that has attracted us rather than the night
life or extravagant celebrations for which NOLA is traditionally known.
This trip we decided to just show up, unannounced and find our accommodations and whatever else we needed. We needed to know
from the tourist point of view what was to be expected on a short trip
to New Orleans.
New Orleans is a major United States port city and historically the largest city in the U.S. state of Louisiana.
It is in southeastern Louisiana along the Mississippi River, just south of Lake Pontchartrain, and is coextensive with Orleans Parish. New Orleans is named after Philippe II, Duke of Orlιans, Regent of France, and is one of the oldest cities in the United States.
New Orleans is known for its multicultural heritage as well as its music and cuisine. It is considered the birthplace of jazz. Its status as
a world-famous tourist destination is due in part to its architecture and its annual Mardi Gras and other celebrations. It is called a unique
city in America.
The city's several nicknames are illustrative. "Crescent City" alludes to the course of the Mississippi River around and through the city; "The Big Easy" was possibly a reference by musicians in the early 1900's to the relative ease of finding work there, but most New Orleanians attribute the term to the city being more carefree and slowed down than cities like New York (the Big Apple); and "The City that Care Forgot" refers to the outwardly easy-going, carefree nature of many of the residents.
Hurricane Katrina was the costliest and one of the deadliest hurricanes in the history of the United States. It was the sixth-strongest Atlantic hurricane ever recorded and the third-strongest land falling U.S. hurricane ever recorded. Katrina formed in late August during the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season and devastated much of the north-central Gulf Coast of the United States.
The 2000 U.S. census put New Orleans's population at 484,674, but Hurricane Katrina in 2005 caused the city's evacuation. Population estimates as of June 2006 range from 192,000to 230,000.
Southwest Airlines does a fantastic job in supporting New Orleans and
has added six new flights to New Orleans that are starting from Dallas, Houston and Nashville. Working with Southwest Airlines has always
been our pleasure and going to New Orleans was no exception. http://www.southwest.com Southwest Airlines had originally planned a marketing meeting in another city but realized that New Orleans needed
the commitment of the industry and with the blessing of the already reserved city, Southwest Airlines brought close to 350 marketing staff members to plan the years work and enjoy the French Quarter.

Before leaving the Crescent City we decided to visit Jerry Fien, our good friend and owner of the French Quarters oldest and most celebrated restaurants, The Court of Two Sisters. This beautiful establishment is owned by Jerry and his brother, having been passed down years ago from their father. Jerry warmly greeted us upon our arrival and invited us in. We spoke at length about the future of New Orleans. The Court of Two Sisters Restaurant symbolizes the pride, and commitment of New Orleans and most specifically, the French Quarter. New Orleans stands tall and warmly reaches out to its visitors with a welcome that glows from deep within the heart.
