Petra was the location for the popular 1989 feature film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. The rose-red city of Petra is also known as the Lost City of Stone.
Petra is located in Jordan, about 3 hours south of the Capital Amman. It is located in a valley running from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba.
The city began about 20 years before the birth of Christ and continued its growth and the building of the city for 2 centuries. The spice trade was really the economic engine that made the city prosperous. It became a powerful fortress city that controlled the passage of traders.
Early 1800s, when it was "rediscovered," clues to daily life in this "lost city of stone" are being unearthed and today we are beginning to see once again what Petra looked like 2,000 years ago.
From this wealth was created an astonishing city of monumental tombs, temples and decorative buildings carved from the solid rock, which still stands as a testament to the remarkable creativity and engineering prowess of the people.
To travel to Jordan you need passport and visa. Visitors may obtain a visa for Jordan, for a fee, at most international ports of entry upon arrival except at the King Hussein/Allenby Bridge.
