Drowning is a leading cause of accidental death for young children. Near
drownings occur every few minutes during warm weather months. With this in
mind, parents have come to realize that children must learn to
swim at an early age.
For most, the lessons are as
palatable as summer treats of lemonade and shortbread cookies. For others,
the first visits to the pool provide all the makings of a family crisis -
even though they are intended to prevent one.

Finding the words to deal with
this and knowing the right approach to take is difficult. But you can be a
terrific, supportive parent by reading WIGGLE-BUTTS
& UP-FACES to your child. Share the illustrations. Discuss
the story. Spending this time together will make the transition from
crying-to-calm a family victory.
Irene Kolbisen's respect for children
and skill in understanding their feelings are the marks of a great teacher
and are displayed wonderfully in this book.
Your persistence and understanding will enable your child to discover the
exciting world of movement through water. Hang in there!

INTRODUCTION
The best time for children to
start swim lessons is when their bodies are best organized for gross motor
skills - the age from infancy to four years.
Water, being a suffocating
liquid and a foreign medium, can either be a delightful experience of
weightlessness and movement for a child, or one of water discomfort in the
eyes, ears, nose and mouth. A good swim program starts with instructors
who know and understand teaching and child development. In addition, to
being knowledgeable swimmers. this combination enhances the swimming
experience for the aquatically inclined and smoothes the path for fussy
and fearful children.

Parents can be an enormous
source of help in this lifesaving process. A firm belief in allowing
children to succeed, coupled with love, discipline, and cooperation with
the teacher, will result in faster, more positive learning, and .
. . fun!

". . .Safety around the
pool must be supplemented with safety in the pool. Kolbisen's sensible yet
sensitive approach demonstrates clearly that young children can and do
learn to swim in a warm and supportive environment.
. . .an exemplary program of
swimming instruction has moved them to the forefront as advocates for the
water safety of children."
