• Terrorism & Tourism

Tourism is an evolving industry, which in recent years has struggled to meet the challenges posed by international crises, local crimes, and the changing priorities of travelers.  Terrorism has had a profound impact on tourism, and has forced the industry to focus on safety & security issues.    Tourism is more sensitive than most industries to concerns about safety & security.   As the recent field survey by the SCTSSA and AOCVCB makes clear, today’s leisure and business travelers, as well as meeting planners and convention managers are making their destination decisions in favor of those venues with a demonstrated commitment to their safety & security.

Some tourist destinations are successfully confronting these challenges.   The 6th annual Tourism Safety & Security Conference will highlight these emerging role models and best practices in an exciting one-day program, at the Anaheim Marriott, on Tuesday March 15, 2005.   With a diverse audience, and a unique blend of nut-n-bolts training content and social networking, this annual conference has grown in to the largest event of its kind in the nation.  If you are involved in securing, policing, marketing, selling, or managing a tourist destination, business, venue, service, or special event, or you are concerned with travel security issues, you won’t want to miss the 2005 Conference.

Everyone connected with the tourism industry has a stake in these issues.  Everyone connected with tourism shares responsibility for helping make our region more safe and secure.  So much has changed since 9/11/01.   Is your tourism related business, venue, or agency stayting current with emerging trends ?   What has been tried, and what is working elsewhere ?  What can you and your business, city, agency, venue, or organization do to help enhance your own security?  How can you collaborate with others in the region to help make all of Southern California more safe and secure?   What concerns do our guests have regarding crime and public safety?  How do we evaluate how well we are meeting tourist needs?  What are the latest legal standards? What are tourist venues around Southern California and the nation doing to enhance tourist safety?    What technologies are available to help secure tourist venues?   How can police agencies and private entities collaborate together to make their own venues safer?   How are the principles of Tourist Oriented Policing being employed to make tourists and tourist venues more safe and secure, and assist the hospitality industry? How can tourism related targets be hardened against acts of terrorism?

The 2005 Conference includes six different training presentations, plus a keynote address.   The event includes a continental breakfast, a hosted luncheon, and a hosted cocktail reception for networking, plus comprehensive conference training materials you can take back and share with your colleagues and staff.  Several
Southern California Prize Packages will be awarded during the cocktail reception.  Simply bring your business card to join in the fun!

Featured speakers include: Charles Ahlers, Reint Reinders, and Colonel Danny McKnight to the 6th annual California Tourism Safety & Security Conference.    Charles Ahlers is the president of the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau.   Reint Reinders is president and CEO of the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau.   The Keynote Address for the 2005 Conference will be given by Colonel Danny McKnight of Black Hawk Down fame.

This Week Sandy and Patrick are off to the Stratosphere Hotel in Las Vegas to check on the status of INSANITY. Immediately after, it's off to Jordan as a guest of King Abudulla II to the Lost city of PETRA. Then after a few days in Petra Sandy and Patrick will meet up with Thomas Steinmetz from eTurboNews where they will share a pavilion in Berlin at the ITB. After the ITB is finished on March 15, it's off to Casa Blanca where Sandy and Patrick will accompany high school students on a week long trip to Morocco.

Sandy was also in Utah on Dec 20 to preview the new INSANITY ride
that will be soon completed and installed on the top of the Stratosphere Hotel
and Casino in early 2005. Her reaction to the ride?
"The term INSANITY fits the entire ride from the moment you
get strapped in until you are dangling almost a thousand feet over
Las Vegas. The spinning combined with the G Force and the 70 degree
angle are enough to make you rethink why you ever got on board.
Once the public is introduced to this wild, darn right scary ride, I predict
it will be become known as the king of thrill rides".
